Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore predictors of depressive symptom trajectories among baby boomers with experiences of suicide ideation. A total 220 subjects from the 2006 to 2011 Korea Welfare Panel Study were selected. For the analyses, latent growth modeling was used. The major findings of this study are as the following. First, depressive symptoms showed a decreasing tendency during the course of the study. Compared to baby boomers with lower depressive symptoms at T1, those higher depressive symptoms showed a greater decreasing rate of symptoms. Second, marital status, perceived health and economic statuses, family relationship satisfaction, family-conflict coping strategies, and self-esteem were cross-sectionally associated with depressive symptoms. Baby boomers who had no spouse, lower perceived health and economic statuses, lower family relationship satisfaction, more negative coping strategies on family-conflict, and lower self-esteem showed higher depressive symptoms at T1. Third, work and self-esteem were significantly associated with the change rate depressive symptoms. Specifically, while self-esteem was positively associated with the change rate of depressive symptoms, work was negatively associated. In other words, while working baby boomers showed greater decreasing rate of depressive symptoms, baby boomers with higher self-esteem showed lower decreasing rate of symptoms. The finding of prevalence of its risk factors is expected to promote the screening or prevention strategy for baby boomers with experience of suicide ideation.
